Ratatouille and Local Flavor Take Center Stage at the National Open Markets Day

On September 19–20, the 3rd National Open Markets Day will bring food, music, and community spirit to 22 markets across Hungary, with the spotlight on lecsó (ratatouille) and local produce.

From Budapest to Pécs, Győr to Miskolc, this year’s Open Markets Day celebrates Hungarian culinary culture with the slogan “The Market as a Meeting Place.” The event highlights the seasonal ingredients of lecsó—a traditional Hungarian stew made from peppers, tomatoes, onions, and paprika—and promotes the role of public markets as vibrant community hubs.

In Budapest, 14 markets will take part, offering tastings, cooking shows, and cultural programs. Highlights include a lecsó and grill tasting series as part of the ongoing “Street of Flavors” program, a Lecsó Festival at Lehel Market, and artisan fairs at Nagycsarnok (Central Market Hall) and Rákóczi Square.

Beyond the capital, local markets are joining the festivities with their own flavors:

  • Szombathely (western Hungary): Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the city’s market offers tastings, tomato and pepper showcases, and lecsó-cooking at the newly opened “Meeting Point.”

  • Hévíz (western Hungary): A live folk dance performance and public discussions highlight the market’s cultural role. In October, a bake sale and fundraiser will mark World Animal Day.

  • Székesfehérvár (central Hungary): Visitors can sample homemade jams, lecsó, wine, cheese, and more in a celebration of traditional flavors.

  • Miskolc (northern Hungary): Lecsó-cooking contests, a mushroom exhibition, honeybread vendors, and even a 3D printing display bring variety to the Búza Square Market.

  • Győr (northwestern Hungary): A charity lecsó cook-off, live radio broadcast, dance shows, and public safety demos are planned for the city’s market.

  • Pécs (southwest Hungary): Events will take place at three locations, each offering local tastings and market experiences.

The Fény Street Market in Budapest’s 2nd district will debut a new attraction: guided gastro-tours for tourists, featuring local producers and food artisans, with tastings of handmade cheeses, meats, pastries, and specialty coffee.
