Hungary and Japan to Deepen Cooperation in Peacebuilding, Space, and Nuclear Industry

Japan is ready to develop cooperation in areas of critical importance to Hungary, such as peacebuilding, space exploration, and the nuclear industry, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade said on Wednesday in Tokyo.

Following his meetings, the Minister stated that during his talks with his Japanese counterpart, he was convinced that the East Asian country is ready to strengthen cooperation with Hungary in these areas.

“Unfortunately, wars, armed conflicts, and security crises are taking place almost everywhere in the world today. Together, these unfortunately carry the risks of  World War III, so it is in the interest of the whole world, especially those countries located in the vicinity of wars, to end these wars and security conflicts as soon as possible and as much as possible,” he pointed out.

“We agreed that international law must be respected by all and that wars cannot be ended on the battlefield but at the negotiating table, through diplomatic solutions. This is one of the most important issues for Hungary today, as we have been living in the shadow of the war in Ukraine for three and a half years,” he added.

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized that previous attempts at peace that sought to end the war in Ukraine on the battlefield have clearly run aground, as this is impossible, in his view.

“Donald Trump’s peace efforts should serve as an example. These peace efforts aim to end this war at the negotiating table, using diplomatic means,” he said.

He continued to say that the parties would strengthen their cooperation in space research and space technology, taking advantage of the fact that Hungarian astronaut Tibor Kapu spent part of his training in Japan, where he participated in ground training for the Japanese module of the International Space Station.

Finally, the Minister emphasized that he considers it necessary to intensify cooperation in the nuclear industry between the two countries, as both sides wish to expand their nuclear capacities in the future.

“We can achieve this in part by extending the operating life of our existing nuclear units. The technical solutions required for this are currently being developed in both countries, thus the extension of the operating life of nuclear units and nuclear power plants will be an area in which Hungary and Japan will cooperate even more closely than before in the coming period,” he said.
