Dodgers’ Blake Snell Has 3-Word Response to Dave Roberts’ Display of Trust

Blake Snell delivered a moment of brilliance that the Los Angeles Dodgers sorely needed on Wednesday night.

Facing a sweep against a stellar Philadelphia Phillies lineup, Snell tossed seven innings of scoreless baseball on a season-high 112 pitches. It was the lefty’s finest night in a Dodgers uniform so far, and it could hardly have come at a better time.

The whole night was huge for Snell and his confidence, but the way it ended was the biggest momentum swing of all.

Snell walked back-to-back batters with two outs in the seventh, putting him at 107 pitches. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts walked to the mound, having every right to pull his starter at that point.

But, after some convincing from Snell, Roberts headed back to the dugout. The lefty then punched out Otto Kemp for his 12th strikeout of the evening, another season-high, and the entire team got a huge boost of energy.

“I was excited,” Snell said, per Sonja Chen of MLB.com. “I don’t like the bullpen finishing my innings. I’m very adamant about that. I don’t want them in that situation. I put myself in this, I can pitch my way out of it.”

The Dodgers led just 3-0 at the time, so the Phillies had the tying run at the plate. It was a moment where a manager had to have some feel for his veteran pitcher at the end of an outing, and somehow, Roberts sensed that Snell still had more in the tank.

“He was adamant he wanted that last hitter,” Roberts said, per Chen. “And I trusted him. And he finished him off the right way. Just a huge boost for us. Just a great performance from pitch one. We needed this one. And he delivered.”

The Dodgers maintained their two-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the National League West at the end of Wednesday night. If they can clinch the division, they’ll get to host a wild card series and will likely send Snell to the mound for one of the first two games.
