A department dedicated to defense innovation and the protection of critical infrastructures has been established at the Innovation Park of SzĂ©chenyi IstvĂĄn University in GyĆr (northwestern Hungary), the State Secretary for Military Development and Defense Policy announced on-site on Thursday.
Zsolt KutnyĂĄnszky stated that with the establishment of this department, military engineering training is being relaunched in Hungary, providing a unique example of how the combined strength of national defense, industry, innovation, and academia can be harnessed in service of a common goal.
The State Secretary added that
in the modern world, national defense is no longer solely about weapons and military technology, since protecting critical infrastructure, cybersecurity, and the field of information technology have become just as important.
He emphasized that ensuring the security of energy supply, transportation networks, healthcare, and digital systems is a key national interest, and this newly established department serves this purpose.
According to Ăron Ballagi, Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Electrical Engineering, which hosts the new Department of Defense Innovation and Critical Infrastructure, specialized postgraduate programs will be launched, such as
- Defense Innovation Engineer and
- Defense Innovation Manager,
along with short-term training courses:
- Defense Innovation Developer,
- Manufacturing Technology Manager,
- Defense Project Manager,
- Financial and Legal Knowledge in the Defense Sector, and
- Technology of Autonomous Aerial Systems in the Aviation Industry.
Ferenc Szauter, head of the department, gave a presentation on the universityâs defense developments, including solutions utilizing virtual reality, border surveillance drone and robot systems, and 3D-printed weapon components. Displayed in front of the building were the Hungarian-developed Komondor combat vehicle by Gamma Zrt., equipped by the university with autonomous vehicle functions, the record-breaking SZEnergy Team electric car, and a Formula Student race car.
