Europe Faces Isolation as EU Leadership Falters, Says Political Director

The European Union has been unable to effectively manage the challenges facing the continent because its centralized management has not solved the problems but rather exacerbated them, said Balázs Orbán, the Prime Minister’s political director, on Thursday at the Brain Bar festival, where he debated with former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt.

“It is the duty of the Hungarian Government to represent the will of the majority of the Hungarian people, and if Hungarian society does not want illegal immigration, then it must act accordingly at the European level,” Balázs Orbán said. He recalled that Hungary pays a daily EU fine of €1 million for its decision to protect its borders and emphasized that the issue of immigration is part of national sovereignty.

Speaking about the EU’s energy supply, he pointed out that Hungary openly purchases cheap Russian energy, while other Member States obtain the same energy through intermediaries. He also emphasized that EU funds are mainly used to finance the war in Ukraine, while young people want jobs, security, and a predictable future.

According to the political director, the current leadership in Brussels has resulted in Europe becoming isolated, relations with Russia, China, and the United States becoming strained, and the EU being unable to respond adequately to crises: “They have become part of the problem, not the solution.”
