“Hungarian Bride” Exhibition Makes International Debut in Croatia

The first international pop-up version of the Hungarian National Museum’s temporary exhibition “Hungarian Bride” has opened in Croatia. It will be on view at the Liszt Institute in Zagreb until October 14.

The large-scale exhibition was on display in Hungary for eight months, and from Wednesday, it is being presented abroad for the first time in the form of a pop-up show, says the museum’s press release.

The exhibition pays tribute not only to famous brides who connect Hungarian and Croatian history—such as Saint Helena (Ilona) of the Árpád Dynasty, and Ilona Zrínyi—but also to the many anonymous women of everyday life who entered into Croatian-Hungarian mixed marriages.

The opening ceremony was made special by the introduction of four such contemporary marriages, with the couples attending in person.

The National Museum’s exhibition, which won the “Exhibition of the Year 2024” award in its category, is now being presented beyond Hungary’s borders thanks to its curator and conceptual creator, Ildikó Simonovics. Her mission and the project’s goal is to create an accessible online archive of images and stories related to Hungarian marriages.

As part of the Zagreb presentation, the organizers are encouraging visitors to share their own unique Croatian-Hungarian marriage stories, that will be added to the “Hungarian Bride” online gallery.

Just like the main exhibition, the pop-up version explores 500 years of history, focusing on how the roles of Hungarian women in society have changed, and how women, couples, and families have approached marriage—both in the past and today.

The traveling exhibition brings to life the stories of princesses, noblewomen, bourgeois ladies, as well as modern-day girls and women, through 22 personal narratives. One of the Budapest exhibition’s highlights is also featured here: visitors can try on traditional bridal headdresses, such as the matyó, sárközi, bátai, veresegyházi, and tamási wreaths, and take photographs wearing them. Other special features of the exhibition include historical wedding dresses and framed wedding keepsakes made from bridal wreaths, that symbolized a young girl’s virginity.
