Keleti Railway Station’s Reopening Off to a Rocky Start

The Keleti Railway Station was supposed to reopen to passenger traffic on Sunday morning after four weeks of closure. Restarting traffic, however, took longer than expected, due to technical issues during the re-energization process. Although traffic partially resumed that afternoon, some trains are still experiencing disruptions.

The delay of reopening was caused by the need to manually adjust several track switches, reads a Facebook post by Zsolt Hegyi, CEO of public transportation company MÁV Group. In response, the National Emergency Operations Center swiftly implemented a temporary traffic plan to manage the situation and ensure continuity of passenger transport, including the use of replacement buses, he informed the passengers.

As of  Sunday early afternoon, the issue has been resolved, he noted. The first train arrived at Keleti shortly before 12:15 p.m., and the first departing service—a Z60 train to Szolnok—left the station on schedule.

As train traffic was being reintroduced in phases, additional trains and replacement buses continued to support passenger travel during the transition period.

Fact

On August 25, renovation work began at Keleti Railway Station. At the time, Zsolt Hegyi said the renovation had been needed for a long time, which was also indicated by two derailments that occurred on-site last year.

As CEO of MÁV, one of his first decisions was to launch the Keleti Program last autumn. He explained at the start of the renovation work that the switches, tracks and overhead lines would be replaced, and interventions would be carried out on a scale that will ensure the smooth operation of Keleti Railway Station for years to come.

Although Zsolt Hegyi said full operations at Keleti were scheduled to resume by Monday morning, according to the MÁV Group website, repairs are still underway in part of Keleti Railway Station.

Therefore, travelers should expect some changes to the schedules of certain domestic and international trains arriving at or departing from the station on Monday as well.
