All thirteen nationalities in Hungary were represented at the fifth Nationalities Gastro Festival, said the State Secretary for Church and Nationality Relations at the opening ceremony on Saturday in Dabas, Pest County.
At the opening of the festival, which was held under the patronage of the Prime Minister’s Office, Miklós Soltész explained that the State Secretariat always tries to organize the event in the center of the country so that nationalities from as many places as possible can attend.
“When I looked at one of the tents, it turned out that nationalities from two parts of the country were standing side by side—on the one hand, the Romanian nationality from the easternmost part, who had traveled from Békés County, and on the other hand, the Slovenes from the westernmost part, from Zala and Vas Counties,” said the State Secretary. He emphasized that this coming together shows that
nationalities in Hungary live together peacefully, that their culture is important to all of us, and that within this culture, gastronomic traditions also play a role.
He added that it is the task and duty of those who seek to support this unity to help all those who live their lives as members of a nationality, so that they can be peaceful and good citizens of the country and preserve their traditions over decades and centuries. “So far, we have done everything we could to achieve this, and we will continue to do so,” the State Secretary declared.
As part of the Nationalities Gastro Festival, 13 nationalities of Hungary presented their traditional culinary arts over the weekend.
The cooking teams prepared their national dishes at authentically designed stands in a show kitchen.
Festival visitors could taste the flavors of various regions and cultures from the Carpathian Basin, the Balkans, the countries of Eastern and Central Europe, and even Armenia. In addition to tastings, the event also featured concerts, folk dance performances, and dance events.
Hungary is home to 13 officially recognized nationalities: Roma, Germans, Romanians, Slovaks, Croats, Ukrainians, Poles, Greeks, Bulgarians, Slovenes, Rusyns, Armenians, and Serbs.
