Balaton Uplands Voted Hungary’s Most Beautiful National Park

Of Hungary’s ten national parks, Balaton Uplands National Park is considered the most beautiful by Hungarians, an online survey by Csodásmagyarország.hu reported.

In the online survey of 2,198 people in July 2025, 22 percent of respondents voted for the Balaton Uplands National Park. In second place was the Aggtelek National Park, famous for its stalactite caves, with 20 percent, while third place went to the Bükk National Park with 18 percent, which attracts visitors with its leafy forests and waterfalls.

The Őrség National Park, with its rural landscape and shady forests, came in fourth with 14 percent, while fifth place went to the Hortobágy National Park, an iconic location for traditional animal husbandry on the Great Plain, with 11 percent.

Fertő-Hanság, known for its aquatic habitats and bird life, and the Duna-Dráva National Park, dotted with floodplain forests and marshes, both received 4 percent in the survey. The Danube-Ipoly National Park, home to riverside valleys and forests, scored 3 percent, while the Körös-Maros National Park, a region of floodplain meadows, and the Kiskunság National Park, home to sand dunes and steppe landscapes, each scored 2 percent.

It should be noted that each of these nature reserves offers unique sights and experiences, including several World Heritage sites, such as the Aggtelek, Hortobágy, and Fertő-Hanság National Parks.

The Balaton Uplands National Park, now voted the most beautiful, hides many attractions: for example, it is home to Kis-Balaton, the setting for the famous Hungarian authors István Fekete’s novels, the Tapolca Lake Cave, which is unique in the world and offers boating opportunities, and the famous Tihany Peninsula. It is also worth exploring the Bakony-Balaton Geopark, Hegyestű, the Basalt Organ cliffs of Badacsony, Salföld, and the Kápolnapuszta Buffalo Reserve.

The small villages of the Káli Basin attract visitors with their attractive location and gastronomic specialties, while Badacsony and Szigliget Castle offer unparalleled panoramic views of the region. The area can be explored as part of a cycling tour around the lake, or by hiking along the local sections of the National Blue Trail or the Balaton Uplands Blue Trail.
