The Hungarian National Dance Ensemble welcomes audiences to the new season with a new production entitled “Alvó szegek” (“Sleeping Nails”), a performance showcasing talented young choreographers, and a dance and music costume show at the Museum of Ethnography.
The season kicked off with a guest performance in Pécs of the crime dance drama “The Unfaithful Wife” on September 7. Based on a Szekler folk ballad and interwoven with passion and dramatic force, the performance will be shown at the Szeged National Theater on October 22 and again at the Müpa stage in December.
On Wednesday, the company will perform in Eger with the dance drama “Robbers’ World”, which recounts the stories of legendary outlaws. (The outlaws are typical figures of the Hungarian folk tradition and have often remained in popular memory as idealized heroes.)
At the end of September, Müpa will present “Castles, Warriors, Frontiers”, a production inspired by István Fekete’s novel, “The Testament of the Aga of Koppány” (“A koppányi aga testamentuma”). At the end of October, a joint production with the National Theater, “Stars of Eger”, will be staged, in which the artists of the dance company will recreate the world of Géza Gárdonyi’s novel on stage. The “Stars of Eger” production is the most spectacular Gárdonyi adaptation of all time. The best-known Hungarian novel is a real big story: about love, loyalty, friendship, patriotism, heroism and growing up, reads the Ensemble’s website.
Last season saw the premiere of the latest piece in the “Living Dance Archive” series, directed by Gergő Sánta, the Ensemble’s dance leader. The performance showcasing the dance culture of the Viharsarok region in the southern Great Plain will be shown again in early October.
On October 11, the Museum of Ethnography will welcome the audience with a costume show accompanied by dance and music.
During the journey through the different regions, the ensemble’s artistic director, Zs. Vincze Zsuzsa, will guide the audience.

On October 25-26, the National Theater will present “Gloaming”, which evokes the musical and dance traditions of Gypsy culture with melodies based on authentic Gypsy music by Tamás Szarka, directed by Attila Vidnyánszky and choreographed by Zoltán Zsuráfszky.
The Hungarian National Dance Ensemble will present its new production, “Sleeping Nails”, at the National Dance Theater on November 12.
Zoltán Zsuráfszky’s latest premiere is not just a dance performance, but an intellectual challenge: a dialogue between movement and poetry. The show, that can also be seen on December 2, features the poetry of László Nagy, Mihály Vörösmarty, János Arany, Miklós Radnóti and János Pilinszky, interwoven with music by Ferenc Kiss, László Rossa and Tamás Szarka.

On December 11, under the title “Old Dance, New Generation”, seven exceptionally talented young choreographers will present their innovative vision at the National Dance Theater with the help of the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble. As Christmas approaches, the “Passion of Csíksomlyó”, another joint creation by Zoltán Zsuráfszky and Attila Vidnyánszky, will return to the stage of the National Theater.
The first production of the new year, “Carnival Sunday”, will bring a carnival atmosphere to the stage of Müpa on January 24: cheerful customs, virtuoso dances, and a colorful world of music will await the audience.
