Parliament Proposes Measures to Combat Political Violence

On Tuesday, the National Assembly’s Defense and Law Enforcement Committee submitted a resolution proposal on measures to combat the spread of political violence.

The document calls on the government to develop proposals to help reduce aggression in physical and digital spaces, and review the rules applicable to violations related to gun ownership and carrying, tightening them if necessary.

The explanatory memorandum refers to the fact that politician Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, from a non-parliamentary opposition party, attended an open election rally with a concealed firearm.

Fact

Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi is a Hungarian military officer and politician who served as Chief of the Hungarian Defense Forces from June 1, 2021, until his dismissal on April 27, 2023.

In February 2025, he was appointed as a leading military expert for the Tisza Party. In September 2025, he sparked controversy by appearing at a public event with a concealed firearm. This incident prompted political reactions, including condemnation from Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who stated that weapons and violence have no place in Hungarian public life.

“This is unprecedented and completely contrary to common sense,” reads the memorandum.

In view of foreign and domestic trends related to the rise of political violence, the National Assembly expresses its commitment to maintaining peaceful public life and calm political dialogue, condemning all forms of political violence and incitement to violence. It is also distancing itself from any political expression that could lead to a rise in violence in Hungary, including the assault and intimidation of journalists, the illegal carrying of weapons in public forums, and incitement and agitation to violence against public figures in both physical and digital spaces, according to the draft resolution.
