Patriots’ Stefon Diggs Gets Honest About Role on Offense

So far this season, four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs has been on the receiving end of just 15 targets, a stark contrast to the 24 targets he saw through the first three weeks of the 2024 NFL season.

Additionally, Diggs has only been on the field for just over half of the team’s offensive plays through the first three weeks.

Despite that, the New England Patriots receiver downplayed the situation while speaking with Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald this week, taking a team-first approach.

“Comparison is the thief of joy. I can’t really think about what’s going on around me. I’ll be cheering for my guys. Always clap for everybody around me, even if it’s not for me. I pretty much always been that way. Even if you do want more, whatever’s on your plate, you got to eat it.

“But I never want to fall into the trap of focusing on something else and not eating the food in front of me. You’re not worried about what’s in front of you and focusing on things outside of football. I just try to focus on the things that’s right in front of me. I want to make sure I scrape the plate, though, I promise you. I’m gonna leave no crumbs.”

According to Patriots QB Drake Maye, he wants to get the ball in Diggs’ hands.

Following a 33-27 win against the Dolphins in Week 2, Maye made it clear days later during a post-practice press conference that he wants to get Diggs the ball more going forward.

“He wants to be a great teammate, he wants to bring the energy, he’s a leader, and he wants the ball. I’ve got to do my part of trying to get it to him more, and then from there, still being honest about throwing to the right guy.”

Last week in the Patriots’ 21-14 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers, however, Diggs was targeted just three times, a new low for the season.

Whether that changes on Sunday when the team hosts the Carolina Panthers, only time will tell; however, in the meantime, it sounds like Stefon Diggs isn’t too worried about the situation.
