Two Genders, Male and Female. Slovakia Follows Hungary’s Suit in Constitutional Amendment

After the Government of Viktor Orbán has amended the Hungarian constitution with the assertion that there are only two genders, a male and a female, Slovakia has today voted to follow suit. In a close vote in Parliament today, Slovak MPs have reached the sufficient number of votes to push through the constitutional change.

When in April this year Hungary has amended its constitution, effectively building a dam against the spread of trans- and gender-ideology, the international woke scene was up in arms demanding immediate action from the EU. Now it seems the practice is spreading and other governments are realizing the importance of protecting children and families from radical left-wing ideologies.

With the exception of two MPs, the current tripartite Slovak government coalition has voted for the change. Three other opposition MPs have also supported the amendment”.

Strengthening the protection of traditional values is key to preserving the cultural heritage of the Slovak Republic and ensuring legal stability.”

“The draft constitutional law therefore responds to the need to protect the cultural heritage enshrined in the preamble to the Constitution of the Slovak Republic, which is specifically linked to the recognition of marriage between a man and a woman as a unique union,” states the approved draft government amendment.

For Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is considered Viktor Orbán’s close regional ally, the issue was not only a matter of combating gender-ideology, but also that of national sovereignty. He explained that Slovakia’s sovereignty in fundamental cultural and ethical issues concerning the protection of life and human dignity, private and family life, marriage, parenthood and family, culture and language, must be protected against EU directives. The proposal also expands the constitutional regulation of social rights, specifically the status of the family and the establishment of parental rights.

Similar to a 2020 Hungarian constitutional amendment, the changes drawn up by the Fico government will also include

a ban on surrogacy and the right of a child to know its parents, and the provision that the mother is a woman and the father is a man.

It will also contain a definition of gender based on biological criteria and strengthen the rights of parents in schools. The new changes will take effect on November 1.
