Bethpage Black has built its reputation for hosting some of the most grueling events in golf, including the US Open and PGA Championship.
But this week, the famed Long Island course made headlines not just for hosting the first Ryder Cup in New York but for a frightening incident.
Even before the first tee shot was struck on Friday, a viral video on X revealed how fans escaped a power line explosion ahead of the on-course action.
Fans lined up outside Bethpage State Park were caught off guard when a power line overhead suddenly sparked and exploded.
The moment captured on video by Nicholas Teigen shows sparks flying and the crowd looking helpless. “Even the power grid at Bethpage couldn’t handle the Ryder Cup tension. Come on Europe!” Teigen posted in the caption.
The explosion sent some fans running, while others ducked for cover. It happened near one of the main entrances, just as spectators were preparing to enter for the opening tee shots.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. But several fans missed the start of play as security quickly rerouted foot traffic.
Officials later confirmed the electrical malfunction and dispatched crews to inspect the site. “An electrical line came down on the crowd. There was a loud bang,” one officer told The Sun. “We had to reroute the entrance. This wasn’t meant to be like this.”
