The New York Jets running back room officially got a bit thinner Thursday morning.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported Thursday that running back Braelon Allen was placed on injured reserve due to an injury suffered Monday against the Miami Dolphins.
Allen is reportedly dealing with an MCL sprain and according to Cimini, surgery is still a possibility to help make a full recovery. That means that while the minimum games missed on injured reserve is four, Allen is trending toward missing much more than just the four-week minimum.
Allen entered the season as the backup running back behind Breece Hall and he was expected to take a step forward after a serviceable rookie season. That hadn’t quite happened yet, as he’d tallied just 93 total yards and one touchdown across the first four games of the season.
Turnovers were a bit of an issue for Allen last season, as he fumbled four times and was unable to recover any of the four. That was starting to happen again this season with Allen having one fumble and it being recovered by the opposing defense.
If Allen misses an extended period of time, it will certainly be a disappointing second season for the 21-year-old out of Wisconsin. He should, though, have plenty of motivation to get back on the field and prove why he was worthy of a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
