L-R: Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze and FM Péter Szijjártó
The Georgian Dream–Democratic Georgia (GD) party triumphed in last week’s local elections, winning every mayoral election despite a boycott by part of the opposition. The victory was welcomed by the party’s allies, including the Hungarian Government, which emphasized the fairness of the elections.
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó congratulated Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze on his re-election, and underlined that the election results reflect the will of Georgian citizens and it must be respected.
Our allies scored a sweeping victory in Georgia. Patriots from Georgian Dream won the municipal elections by a landslide, bravo! Congrats to Kakha Kaladze on being re-elected Mayor of Tbilisi. Wonder (though not really) when the EU will condemn the opposition’s violence…”
However, after the results were announced, anti-government protests began in Tbilisi, with some protesters attempting to reach the presidential palace. The police used tear gas and water cannons to maintain order.
Responding to the situation, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that foreign agents should not be allowed to remain active in Georgian politics. According to the head of government, the alleged organizers of the attempted coup will be held accountable, and no one will escape punishment.
The Georgian Interior Ministry stated that the proceedings have been initiated against five protest leaders for attempting to violently overthrow the government, and they face up to nine years in prison. Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Darakvelidze emphasized that the country’s security and legal order must be protected under all circumstances.
The presence of foreign influence in domestic political events is a cause for concern.
PM Irakli Kobakhidze pointed out that activist groups and organizations from Western countries are trying to spread ideologies that are alien to Georgian society and that influence families and young people.
