Our German Readers Show Solidarity with Hungary During Angela Merkel’s Shameful Visit

“Ms. Merkel, you bring shame on Germany”, says the banner during the demonstration in Budapest.

During the past weeks we have reported about former German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s controversial visit to Hungary several times. In reaction to this, readers of Hungary Today and that of our German sister site, Ungarn Heute, have reported their concerns and thoughts about the circumstances of this visit. Yet the German community in Hungary went a step further, demonstrating their opposition to Merkel’s political legacy, as well as showing solidarity with conservative Hungary.

In a statement sent to our offices they wrote that “We have been following the news on your internet blog UNGARN HEUTE for a long time. We are German patriots with ties to Hungary. Many of us live here permanently… We are more of a loose association of 10+x, not an association, not a party, and not a financial interest group. What each of us does is our own free choice…

As for the intention behind the banners, in order to attract media attention, we decided back in 2015 to display larger banners on certain occasions. We want to draw attention to abuses and encourage people to think. We also had a lot to do during the coronavirus pandemic. We have already been very active in Hungary, particularly with regard to Orbán Viktor’s commendable refugee policy, the constitutionally correct treatment of violent criminals such as Maja T, alias Simeon, and the visit of former Chancellor Merkel, which we felt was worth commenting on. With THANK YOU HUNGARY, we want to express exactly that.”

Estimates put the number of indigenous German minority in Hungary and expats born in Germany at around 200.000. Many are our loyal readers, for which we remain grateful to them.
