During the regular season, the top-seeded Blue Jays were AL East champions with a 94-86 record while the No. 2-seed Mariners won the AL West with a record of 90-72.
Seattle came from behind for a 3-1 victory in Game 1 on Sunday night. Cal Raleigh tied the game with a solo home run in the sixth inning before Jorge Polanco’s RBI single two batters later scored Julio Rodríguez to give the Mariners the lead. Polanco added an insurance run with an eighth-inning single, and Bryce Miller shook off a leadoff homer to allow two hits in six innings.
George Springer hit the first leadoff home run in Toronto postseason history before the bats went silent as the Jays were hitless in the game after Anthony Santander’s second-inning single. Kevin Gausman took the hard-luck loss after allowing two runs on three hits over 5.2 innings.
Rookie Trey Yesavage is scheduled to start Game 2 for Toronto after a dominant performance against the New York Yankees in Game 2 of the AL Division Series, in which he no-hit the Yanks over 5.1 innings with 11 strikeouts. Right-hander Logan Gilbert worked two scoreless innings of relief on Friday in Seattle’s series-clinching win over the Detroit Tigers after starting and winning Game 3 of the series on Tuesday. He has a 1.13 ERA in eight postseason innings to go with nine strikeouts.
