Transylvanian Football Club FK Csíkszereda Fined for Hungarian and Szekler Flags

Zoltán Szondy, President of FK Csíkszereda, the football club from Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda), town located in Harghita County, Romania, is awaiting an explanation as to why the gendarmerie in Targu-Mures (Marosvásárhely) fined the football club for displaying Hungarian and Szekler flags.

He stated at a press conference on Monday that they had received no guidance from the authorities, yet they were fined EUR 6,000.

He emphasized that the government commissioner should oversee legality, but as President of the FK Csíkszereda club, he had not received any notification.

Write to us to tell us whether the Hungarian flag and the Szekler flag are banned or not. Our Members of Parliament and Senators should speak up. Let us know if they are banned,”

said Zoltán Szondy. He added that if the Hungarian and Szekler flags are not banned, then he does not understand on what basis they are being fined.

We want to focus on football. This is not our war,”

he said.

The club president believes that the fines are putting the club in a position where it would have to prevent Hungarian and Szekler flags from being brought into the stadium and prevent people wearing shirts with these emblems from entering.

Fact

The Romanian Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee issued a warning in September to FK Csíkszereda for displaying Szekler symbols and the word “Székelyföld” at a match, citing concerns over offending Romanian fans. This occurred before the August 17 match against Universitatea Craiova held in Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda), when the children accompanying the home team entered the pitch wearing shirts displaying the word Szeklerland and the colors and symbols of the Szekler flag. President Zoltán Szondy criticized the decision as anti-Hungarian at the committee meeting,  arguing that the team had violated no laws. However, he expressed willingness to remove the children’s shirts in order to prevent them from becoming targets in the ongoing conflict between Hungarians and Romanians.
