Prime Minister Viktor Orbán visited Vatican City and Rome, Italy, on Monday, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén.
The Hungarian Prime Minister was received in private audience by Pope Leo XIV. During the nearly hour-long meeting, the two parties held a bilateral conversation. Afterward, the Hungarian Prime Minister introduced his family and entourage to the Holy Father, followed by an exchange of gifts. He held talks with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.
The statement released by the Vatican emphasized that “during the cordial meeting at the Secretariat of State, they emphasized the strength of bilateral relations and expressed their appreciation for the Catholic Church, which is committed to helping the Hungarian community’s social development and well-being, with particular regard to the role of the family, education, and the future of young people.”
They also highlighted the importance of protecting the most vulnerable Christian communities.
In addition, they discussed European issues at length, paying particular attention to the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.
The head of government will hold working talks in Rome with Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of the Italian Republic.
