Hungary Helps Program in Chad Achieves Tangible Results

The humanitarian missions of the Hungary Helps Program in Chad are successful, announced the State Secretary responsible for aiding persecuted Christians on Sunday, as the Hungary Helps program in Chad entered its second year.

Tristan Azbej began his Facebook post with the words, “together for human lives,” noting that the humanitarian missions carried out in recent days have yielded tangible results.

He explained that the knowledge sharing, triage and resuscitation training provided by Hungarian experts to fifty Chadian doctors and nurses in the country’s capital had saved lives.

The Sate Secretary continued by saying that, together with their Chadian partners, they adhere to the principle of “giving a fishing rod instead of a fish,” meaning that instead of distributing aid, they help local communities through sustainable knowledge transfer.

Azbej is particularly pleased that ten of the training participants will be able to pass on the knowledge they have acquired as instructors.

He also reported on the medical program that saves sight and lives. In the Lake Chad region, where humanitarian crises are particularly severe, Hungarian and Chadian experts have performed eye examinations on hundreds of people, including refugees, he added.

He wrote that eye diseases detected in time can save not only peoples’ vision but also, in many cases, their lives. He thanked the Budapest St. Francis Hospital and the Baptist Charity Service for their dedicated work and service.

He recalled that the Hungary Helps Program opened its office in Chad in early 2024.

Since then, the office has been providing life-saving assistance to those fleeing conflict and to host communities, developing the capacity of the refugee care system, providing support after natural and man-made disasters, providing vocational training to help people earn a living, and strengthening food security through agricultural and livestock development.

Our common goal remains unchanged: to save lives and help ensure that people in one of the last stable countries in the Sahel region are not forced to leave their homes, but can build their future in their own country,”

said the State Secretary.
