Budapest Airport Continues Record Growth, Terminal 3 Set for 2035 Completion

Traffic at Liszt Ferenc International Airport continues to break records, emphasized Máté Lóga, State Secretary for Economic Development and Industry at the Ministry for National Economy (NGM) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Budapest Airport, on Wednesday.

He said that the Hungarian aviation ecosystem, and especially Budapest Airport and HungaroControl, had worked hard to overcome previous delays through strong strategic cooperation, resulting in improved schedules. All this has contributed to much more accurate arrivals and departures, which greatly improves the passenger experience.

The state secretary recalled on the program that the airport had to be closed due to a storm in the summer, which showed that the government and Budapest Airport, which operates the airport, take air transport seriously.

Máté Lóga also said that they would like to establish direct rail access between Budapest city center and the airport, connecting the line to the national backbone network, thus making the airport accessible to large cities in the countryside as well. The state secretary said that Terminal 3 will be built at the airport. One of the cornerstones of the repurchase of Budapest Airport was that the Hungarian state would ensure future developments.

During the transaction process, an agreement was reached with the operator that Terminal 3 must be built, which will be completed by 2034-2035, but part of Terminal 3 could be opened to passengers as early as 2031.

Ferenc Antal, Deputy State Secretary for Strategic Transactions at the Ministry for National Economy (NGM), said on the program that the growth in airport cargo traffic is also supported by the Hungarian legal system.

The Hungarian customs clearance and customs procedure system is considered world-class, and he mentioned as an example that it can handle a given volume of goods quickly.
