Government Announces Support for a Residential Energy Storage Program

The government is announcing a residential energy storage program with a budget of HUF 100 billion (EUR 261 million), the Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office said on Wednesday in Budapest.

Gergely Gulyás emphasized that this is key to ensuring that families with solar panels can remain self-sufficient in the long term and secure their own electricity supply, while also contributing to the sustainability of utility cost reductions.

Anyone who has solar panels or undertakes to install them can participate in the tender, for which they can purchase a 10-kilowatt energy storage unit with the help of the tender, for which the government provides a non-repayable subsidy of HUF 2.5 million (EUR 6,532), the Minister detailed.

Following the announcement, Gábor Czepek, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, confirmed in a Facebook post that in early February, the Hungarian Government will launch the tender for families, offering the non-refundable subsidy for the purchase of 10-kilowatt-hour energy storage units.

He added that self-sufficiency is a key issue not only for the country but also for its people, and that in terms of electricity, it starts with solar panels and continues with energy storage devices.

Anyone who has solar panels or plans to install them can apply for a state subsidy. Those who have already been excluded from the annual balance settlement or those who will be excluded by 2030, will have an advantage in the assessment, followed by residents of small rural settlements.

He pointed out that Hungary has been undergoing a solar panel revolution since 2010, in the spirit of a patriotic green transition. At that time, there were fewer than 300 solar power plants operating in the country, while today more than 320,000 produce green energy.

Hungary is a world leader in the share of electricity produced by solar panels, the State Secretary emphasized. These enormous capacities will become a real force when we are able to solve the issue of energy storage. Solar power plants are humming during the day, but peak consumption occurs in the late afternoon and early evening, thus it is necessary to store electricity for at least a few hours, he added.

The detailed call for applications will be published by mid-January, and applications can be submitted via a user-friendly interface from early February to mid-March. During the evaluation process, priority will be given to those who have already been excluded from the annual balance settlement or will be excluded in the next five years, followed by residents of settlements with a population of less than 5,000, he explained.

“In 2026, we will shift into an even higher gear in strengthening our storage capacities, and I will be making further announcements soon,” wrote the State Secretary.
