From January, All Motorhomes Will Be Subject to the E-Vignette System

Act LXVII of 2013 on the distance-based tolls payable for the use of motorways, expressways and main roads is changing, as a result of which motorhomes with a maximum permissible weight of over 3.5 tons will be able to use the Hungarian toll road network under the usage fee system from January 1, 2026, according to the National Toll Payment Services Ltd.

In view of the change in legislation, from January 1, 2026, anyone wishing to use a toll road in Hungary with a motorhome will have to purchase an e-vignette.

From January 1, 2026, it will no longer be possible to pay tolls in the HU-GO e-toll system for the use of motorhomes over 3.5 tons that were previously included in the e-toll system, either as a registered user with an on-board device or without registration by purchasing a route ticket.

D1 or D2 toll category?

As in all cases, the information and data contained in the vehicle registration certificate or other authentic documents issued for the motor vehicle are decisive for determining the toll category.

You must pay attention to the data in the J (vehicle category), F.1 (combined weight, maximum permissible total weight) and S.1 (number of seats including the driver, number of passengers) fields.

The service provider pointed out that the fee category selection guide for motorhome owners, providing authentic and accurate information on all possible scenarios, can help motorhome owners select the appropriate fee category.

Based on this, for example, the D1 fee category includes all motorhomes with a maximum permissible gross weight of up to 3.5 tons, whose registration certificate indicates M1 in the vehicle category field and a maximum of 7 seats, including the driver, in the “S.1” field.

At the same time, regardless of their weight, motorhomes marked M1 that can carry more than 7 people fall into category D2.

Motorhomes are also classified in the D2 fee category, regardless of the number of passengers they can carry, if the vehicle registration certificate shows the letter code M1 in the “J” field and the vehicle weighs more than 3.5 tons.
