Hungarian Officers Helping Serbia and Bulgaria to Protect Their External Borders

Hungarian police officers are able to maintain public safety on the streets and protect the country’s external borders, while also helping other countries protect their external borders, said the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior (BM) on Tuesday in Budapest at the farewell ceremony for the Hungarian police contingent leaving for Serbia and the Bulgarian-Turkish border.

Bence Rétvári recalled that Hungary’s position on illegal migration has been consistent from the outset, with external border protection being the most important task.

He added that if we join forces with other countries in this task, we will be more effective together. He said that within this framework, Austrians, Slovaks, Czechs, and Poles have also been present at Hungary’s southern border, but there are also Turks who are involved in checking trucks.

Hungary is participating in the protection of Bulgaria’s external border with Turkey alongside the Austrians and Romanians, and in Serbia alongside the Austrians.

As the state secretary noted, the Hungarian example is becoming increasingly contagious, with Slovenian and Italian police now present on Croatia’s shared border with Bosnia, alongside Croatian police.

We must protect Europe’s security, the state secretary emphasized. He added that on New Year’s Eve, migrants set fire to cars en masse in Western Europe, nearly 1,200 in France alone. He pointed out that, in contrast, Hungarian police officers are keeping order on Hungarian streets, there are no riots, no one is setting cars on fire, and there are “zero migrants” in Hungary, while there are significant numbers of migrants living in Western Europe.

He pointed out that accepting the migration pact would mean that we would also have to accept the violence seen in Western Europe, where illegal immigrants set fire to restaurants and cars and shoot at each other on the streets. He added that Brussels, although it sees the problem, has not found a meaningful solution to it.

He also said that no matter what difficulties arise, whether it be new waves of migration, illegal immigration, or extreme weather, the Hungarian people trust the police, firefighters, and paramedics because they know that they can protect them, and for this they owe a debt of gratitude to those in uniform.

We have a lot to thank the police for, as they are able to provide the Hungarian people with a level of security every day of the year that neither the German nor the French police are capable of, said the state secretary, emphasizing that in recognition of this, the weapon allowance, a six-month allowance for police officers, will arrive in mid-February.
