Modern weapons systems are only as effective as the technicians who keep them operational. At the Logistics Battalion of the György Klapka 1st Armored Brigade of the Hungarian Defense Forces in Tata (northeastern Hungary) the focus at the end of 2025 was on “surgery on heavy equipment.” Engineers and weapons technicians received comprehensive training on Hungary’s new spearhead capability, the Leopard 2A7HU.
During November and December 2025, operations at the brigade’s logistics battalion in Tata were running at full capacity. The training centered on the firepower and precision of the most modern tank fleet of the Hungarian Defense Forces. To ensure the long-term operational readiness of the newly commissioned Leopard 2A7HU systems, technicians completed an intensive manufacturer-led training program conducted by defense company KNDS.

Building on their prior experience, unit specialists systematically acquired in-depth knowledge of the tank’s main armament. The intensive training program focused primarily on mastering the technical aspects of the main weapon, particularly the maintenance of the powerful 120mm Rheinmetall L55A1 smoothbore gun.
At the same time, the specialists deepened their expertise in electronics, with particular emphasis on the precise calibration and maintenance of the complex fire-control system and the state-of-the-art optics.
The complexity of the training was especially evident during a demanding exercise involving the turret systems. As a technical highlight, participants were required to completely lift off the massive turret and then precisely reintegrate it onto the hull to ensure the full functionality of the weapon system.
With the completion of the training series in December 2025, the Hungarian Defense Forces reached an important milestone.

“Modern military technology must not only be operated, but also sustainably maintained,” the brigade stated in its Facebook post.
Thanks to the newly available qualified personnel, the unit is now capable of carrying out maintenance and repair tasks on the Leopard 2A7HU entirely independently.
This is particularly significant as the Hungarian Defense Forces were able to complete the induction of the Leopard fleet by the end of the year. As previously reported, the final Leopard 2A7HU tank manufactured at the KNDS facility was officially handed over in Tata in the first half of December.

Fact
The Leopard 2A7 features high speed and maneuverability for its class and is extremely reliable. It is currently one of the most modern serial-production main battle tanks in the world. Its firepower is provided by a 120mm Rheinmetall tank gun capable of delivering accurate fire at distances of up to 5,000 meters.
The tank is also equipped with a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, a remotely operated 12.7mm machine gun, and 16 76mm smoke grenade launchers, which are also capable of firing fragmentation grenades.
