President Tamás Sulyok will be in Germany for a three-day working visit from January 18 to 20, 2026. At the invitation of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Hungarian head of state will travel to Bavaria, where, in addition to political talks, the focus will be on commemorating the victims of dictatorship and expulsion.
As announced by the Sándor Palace on Sunday, the president’s program includes meetings with high-ranking representatives from federal and state politics. Among other things, a meeting with Saxony’s Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) is on the agenda.
A central part of the trip is a meeting with Stephan Mayer (CSU), member of the Bundestag and president of the Federation of Expellees (BdV), which represents the interests of Germans expelled from their homeland and expropriated after the Second World War.
On Sunday, Tamás Sulyok visited a memorial on the site of a former satellite camp of the Dachau concentration camp. There, he laid a wreath together with Bavarian state parliamentarians and Stephan Mayer.
“This place reminds us of the consequences that can result from unleashing ideologies that are hostile to God and humanity. Human life must never be sacrificed on the altar of power, hatred, and war,” emphasized the Hungarian head of state in a personal message on his social media page. Between the summer of 1944, and the spring of 1945, 4,000 Hungarian Jews were forced to perform hard labor for the German Reich’s armaments industry in this satellite camp, he recalled.
In another post, the president praised the work of Kornél Klement, chairman of the Federation of Hungarian Organizations in Germany, for his commitment to preserving national identity and promoting German-Hungarian friendship.
On Monday, the president extended his visit to include specific political issues. At a meeting with Dr. Csaba Láng, Chairman of the German-Hungarian Lawyers’ Association, the focus was on cooperation in the field of law. The aim is to deepen mutual awareness of the respective legal systems and to further promote professional cooperation between lawyers in both countries, the president explained.
In Bavaria, Sulyok is also seeking close contact with the Hungarian community.
Meetings with representatives of the Hungarian diaspora and the Hungarian Catholic Mission of Munich are also on the agenda. The visit ends on Tuesday and underscores the multifaceted relations between Budapest and Berlin.
