Packers Coach’s Job in Jeopardy After Jonathan Gannon Hire

On Sunday, the Green Bay Packers hired former Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon to become their next defensive coordinator after Jeff Hafley left to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, per multiple reports.

Gannon, 43, went 15-36 during his three seasons with Arizona. The Cardinals hired him after Gannon had success as the defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 and 2022.

Gannon took the Arizona job after the Eagles lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII. Gannon’s defense was impressive in 2022, recording 70 sacks.

Per Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers rushed to hire Gannon before interviewing Denver Broncos assistant head coach/defensive pass game coordinator Jim Leonhard because the Los Angeles Chargers and New York Giants were gaining interest in the former Cardinals head coach.

Demovsky dropped another nugget in his report, claiming Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is open to making another coaching change this offseason.

“A source said LaFleur was still ‘working through’ an additional change to his coaching staff for 2026,” Demovsky wrote.

It’s unclear what change LaFleur is “working through” in late January.

Based on replies to Demovsky’s story, many Packers fans hope the team moves on from special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia or offensive line coach Luke Butkus.

“Is the change he’s still “working through” a new special teams coordinator?” asked a fan.

“@RobDemovsky reports that Matt LaFleur is likely to make another move with his staff. I’m guessing it’ll be replacing OL coach Luke Butkus, but who knows, it could wind up being hiring a new assistant to the quality control assistant,” guessed another.

The Packers ended their season with a 31-27 loss to the Chicago Bears in the wild-card round.

Special teams cost Green Bay in the loss to the Bears. Kicker Brandon McManus missed two field goals and an extra point. Running back Josh Jacobs fumbled a kickoff return. The Packers allowed a 37-yard punt return off a 50-yard punt.

In the Bears’ 22-16 win over the Packers in overtime on Dec. 20, Green Bay gave up an onside kick late in the fourth quarter that allowed Chicago to tie the game.
