Eszter Muhari won gold and Gergely Siklósi won bronze on Sunday at the épée Grand Prix in Doha.
Olympic bronze medalist Muhari defeated South Korea’s Min Jivont, America’s Jolie Korfonta, and South Korea’s Lim Taehit by the same score of 15-11, then beat Italy’s Alberta Santuccio 14-13.
In the semifinals, she fenced against Ukraine’s Anna Maksimenkova and won 15-14. At the beginning of the bout, she was behind by three points twice, then turned the tables and led 14-12, but her opponent equalized, and Muhari scored the final hit.
In the final, she faced France’s Alexandra Louis-Marie, who was barely able to score against her: the score was 4-0 at the first break and 7-2 at the second. The match remained unchanged in the third three minutes, with the Hungarian épée fencer mostly scoring at a good pace and with precision, eventually triumphing 15-5.
Lili Büki also performed well, defeating Turkish, Russian and American opponents to finish in seventh place. Emma Borsody finished in the third round of the 64-player table, while Kinga Dékány, Júlia Rózsás and Edina Kardos were eliminated in the second round and Blanka Nagy in the first round.
There were 180 competitors in the women’s competition.
Siklósi, the 2019 world champion, last year’s world championship silver medalist, and Olympic team champion in Paris, defeated Germany’s Matthew Buelau 15-12, then France’s Gaetan Billá 15-8, Switzerland’s Alexis Bayard, who had previously eliminated world and Olympic champion Máté Koch, 15-13, and Czech Jakub Jurka 15-5.
In the top four, he fought against Italy’s Simone Mencarelli, and although the score was tied after the first three minutes, the Hungarian épée fencer, who won silver here last year, ultimately lost 15-9.
Two other members of the Olympic gold medal-winning team, Tibor Andrásfi and Dávid Nagy, also reached the quarterfinals, with the latter also being stopped by Mencarelli. Csaba Fenyvesi, like Koch, was eliminated in the second round, while Gergely Kovács lost in his first main draw bout.
There were 250 competitors in the men’s event.
