Sean McVay, Rams Lose Coveted Coach to NFC West Rival: Report
The Los Angeles Rams’ season ended in gut-wrenching fashion last week with a 31–27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game.
Now, just a week removed from that defeat, head coach Sean McVay is set to lose a key assistant. According to reports, offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur is heading to Arizona to become the next head coach of the Cardinals, filling one of the final head coaching vacancies.
LaFleur, 38, brings more than a decade of NFL experience and is the latest disciple from the coaching tree of Kyle Shanahan and McVay, a group that continues to produce head coaches across the league. He is also the brother of Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.

LaFleur has served as the Rams’ offensive coordinator since 2023. Prior to that, he held the same role with the New York Jets, spent four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers as a passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach, and worked as an offensive assistant with the Atlanta Falcons.
His coaching career began in college, where he spent multiple seasons at the Division III, Division II, and FCS levels before making the jump to the NFL as an intern with the Cleveland Browns.
It now appears to be the ideal time for the Rams to promote passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, who interviewed for several head coaching vacancies this offseason and remains one of the most sought-after young coaches in the sport, as the team’s next OC after coming up short in his first offseason as a legitimate head coaching candidate.
