Last year, Aaron Rodgers held the Pittsburgh Steelers hostage as he took his time in deciding whether he wanted to retire or continue playing in 2025.
Ultimately, it worked out for both sides as Rodgers signed a one-year deal and led the Steelers to a 10-7 record, an AFC North division title, and a playoff appearance, but now they find themselves in the exact same situation as last offseason.
But there may be a silver lining this time, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
While many believed Pittsburgh parting ways with former head coach Mike Tomlin all but sealed Rodgers not returning in 2026, Pelissero says that isn’t the case — and it likely has to do with Tomlin’s replacement, Mike McCarthy.

“Rodgers has not yet informed the Steelers whether he will return for a 22nd NFL season, but my understanding is the odds are increasing,” Pelissero stated. “I am told Rodgers has spoken several times with new Steelers coach Mike McCarthy, who of course helped Rodgers develop into a four-time MVP and a Super Bowl winner in green Bay.
“Rodgers has also spoken with wide receiver DK Metcalf, who wants Rodgers back at age 42. The plan is for Rodgers to take a little bit more time, and everyone hopes (he) comes to a decision prior to the start of free agency in mid-March. … At this point, it would not be a surprise if Rodgers is back in Pittsburgh.”

McCarthy and Rodgers won 125 games, six division titles, and one Super Bowl championship together in Green Bay from 2006 to 2018.
During that stretch, Rodgers also won two MVPs and a Super Bowl MVP, he was a three-time All-Pro selection, and he made seven Pro Bowls. He also led the NFL in passer rating twice and touchdowns once.
Rodgers completed 65.7% of his passes for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions this year — showing that he still has plenty left in the tank.
