The foundation stone has been laid for a new investment worth approximately HUF 17 billion (EUR 45 million / EUR 1=HUF 377) by Becton Dickinson, the global market leader in medical device manufacturing, in Környe (northwestern Hungary), announced Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Monday at the site.
At the cornerstone-laying ceremony for Becton Dickinson Hungary, the minister reported that the medical technology company, one of the world market leaders, will expand its operations in Környe and build a sterilization plant in the town next to its syringe factory. The government is supporting the HUF 17 billion investment with HUF 3 billion.
The politician pointed out that
this development is also important for the global operations of the company, which is present in 61 countries, as the factory will be unique in the entire network.
He welcomed the fact that nearly one-third of Becton Dickinson’s suppliers are Hungarian, meaning that this investment also provides development opportunities for local businesses. He also emphasized that the company supports the training of young people, and that 98% of the products manufactured here are exported.
“The current annual capacity of 700 million units will soon double and reach 1.5 billion units,” he said, recalling one of the lessons of the coronavirus pandemic, namely that efforts should be made to achieve self-sufficiency in the manufacture of medical devices.
Minister Szijjártó also pointed out that industrial production in Komárom-Esztergom County has tripled in ten years and exceeded HUF 5,000 billion for the first time last year, while unemployment has fallen to around 2.5%.
“Never before have so many investments come to Hungary, never before have so many factories started to be built in Hungary, and never before have companies created so many jobs in Hungary as in the past four years.
Breaking record after record, last year we signed an agreement on a new major investment every three and a half days, in which the Americans played a particularly important role,”
he said.
In this regard, he emphasized that this current event also proves that there is a new wind blowing in relations between Hungary and the United States, after a record amount of investment was agreed upon with American companies last year. “Never before have 16 American companies committed to a total of 190 billion forints in investments in Hungary,” he said.
