The Cleveland Browns are losing tight end David Njoku after nine years with the team, though his decision to explore free agency will cost the team even if he is not on the team.
Njoku came out of the NFL Draft as an explosive tight end prospect, and over the years, he has developed into a well-rounded player who can block and run quality routes.
However, his time has been filled with uncertainty and controversy, including trade requests, issues with coaches, and a fire-pit accident, all while he has had lackluster quarterback play.
Despite the rocky waters, he has produced and become a reliable weapon over the last year of his contract, and with rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr. emerging, his departure makes sense for both parties.
His departure will cost a substantial amount of money after his four-year, $54.75 million extension in 2022 was restructured multiple times to create dead money.
“TE David Njoku announced that he plans to sign elsewhere this free agent season, leaving the #Browns with $24.3M of (void year) dead cap on his way out,” Spotrac wrote on X.
“For a little clarity on this, the Browns & Njoku agreed to a contract restructure in October that pushed the void date back to February of 2029, adding in “dummy” salaries for 2026-2028.
“This allows Cleveland to carry the contract into the league year, then designate him a Post 6/1 release for dead cap purposes. They must do this by March 13th, or a $75M salary in 2028 becomes fully guaranteed.”
Why is David Njoku leaving the Browns?
Njoku released a statement regarding his decision, thanking the city and marking the end of a new chapter.
“Cleveland, first off I love you. These 9 years have been a beautiful journey. I’m am so grateful for all the memories we shared together,” Njoku wrote on Instagram.
“Thank you to The Haslams, Andrew Berry and the whole browns organization for everything!! All my teammates I shared the battle with I’m so grateful for you guys.
“The time for me to find a new home has come and all I can think of is just the gratefulness in my heart. The city of Cleveland will forever be home.”
