Mikaela Shiffrin Suffers Disheartening Olympics Results in Giant Slalom

The Winter Olympics have been challenging for Team USA skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin, who finished with another disappointing result in her attempt to medal at Milano Cortina, Italy.

On Sunday, Shiffrin competed in the women’s giant slalom final, hoping to make up for her failure to reach the podium at her first skiing event last week. However, her individual pursuit didn’t work out in her favor; she finished 11th with a total time of 2:14.42, keeping her well off the podium.

Italy’s Federica Brignone claimed the gold medal in the event with a time of 2:13.50, followed by a surprising tie as Sweden’s Sara Hector and Norway’s Thea Louise Stjernesund finished with identical times to share the silver.

Shiffrin’s USA teammate, Paula Moltzan, finished in 15th place with a total time of 2:14.77. Team USA’s Nina O’Brien was 20th with a time of 2:15.31, according to the giant slalom final results.

An NBC Olympics video spotlighted her first run of the giant slalom, referring to it as a “clean run” to get things started in the event.

Shiffrin had a significant deficit to overcome to get into contention in the giant slalom, but couldn’t pull off the comeback in her three runs.

An FIS Alpine X post shows the top 10 results for the event, with Shiffrin’s name just missing that list, and some wondering if she’s fallen from her top spot among alpine skiers at the Olympics.

It was Shiffrin’s second time not reaching the podium for a medal at the Milano Cortina Olympics. She first had an opportunity to claim one with her USA teammate Breezy Johnson at the women’s combined event.

Johnson put together a worthy performance in her downhill portion of the event, keeping the duo in contention for a medal. However, Shiffrin’s performance in the slalom portion wasn’t enough, and the team finished fourth overall.

Their USA teammates, Jacqueline Wiles and Paula Moltzan, claimed bronze in the event, but Shiffrin and Johnson would have loved to share the podium with them. Nonetheless, the winningest alpine skier of all time sent congratulatory messages to her bronze medal-winning teammates on their win.

Shiffrin is not yet finished at these Winter Olympics in Italy, as she has one final attempt to win a medal when she participates in the women’s slalom competition this week.
