Industrial production sees another dismal year in 2025

The volume of industrial production exceeded the one year earlier level by 1.8%, while based on working-day adjusted data declined by 1.0% in December 2025. A production increase occurred in the majority of the manufacturing subsections. According to seasonally and working-day adjusted data industrial output was 0.9% higher than in November 2025. The volume of industrial production lagged behind the 2024 level by 3.2% in 2025.

In December 2025 the volume of industrial production increased by 1.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. (Compared to the December data published in the first estimate, the data in the second estimate did not change.)

Industrial output– according to seasonally and working-day adjusted indices – was above the previous month’s level by 0.9%.

The volume of industrial export was 0.6% lower than a year earlier. The manufacture of transport equipment export, representing a 27% weight within export sales in manufacturing declined by 0.7%, while the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products export, accounting for a 18% weight, went up by 35%.

Domestic sales of industry decreased by 5.0%, those of manufacturing rose by 1.4% compared to the same month of the previous year.

Within industry, production grew by 3.9% in the decisive (93%) weight representing manufacturing, at the same time fell by 21% in the energy industry (electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply), and dropped by 18.4% in the small weight representing mining and quarrying.

Output volume of the largest weight representing manufacture of transport equipment, having a 21% share in manufacturing, rose by 1.0% compared to the same month of the previous year. Motor vehicles manufacturing grew by 0.6%, the manufacture of parts and accessories for motor vehicles dropped by 5.9%.

The manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products, accounting for 14% within manufacturing output, increased by 38%. Considering the two largest groups, the manufacture of computers and peripheral equipment went up by 92%, at the same time the manufacture of electronic components and boards fell by 11.5%.

The manufacture of electrical equipment, representing an 8.9% weight in manufacturing exceeded by 12.5% the low base level of December 2024.Out of the two largest weight representing groups production volume in the manufacture of batteries and accumulators grew by 27%, the manufacture of electric motors, generators, transformers and electricity distribution and control lessened by 2.0%.

The manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco products, having a 15% share in manufacturing, was 6.5% higher than in the same month of the previous year, both domestic and export sales increased. Processing and preserving meat and the production of meat products, representing the largest weight (24%) rose by 15.5%. Production grew between 0.1% and 41% in six other groups, too, most of all in the manufacture of tobacco products, least of all in the manufacture of grain mill products, starches and starch products. Output decreased between 2.8% and 48% in the other four groups, to the greatest extent in the processing and preserving of fish, crustaceans and molluscs, having a very small weight.

Out of the two medium weight representing subsections the manufacture of rubber and plastics products and other non-metallic mineral products rose by 2.1%, the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment grew by 3.5% compared to the same month of the previous year.

A decrease is going on since April in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products representing a 5.1% weight in manufacturing: the output in December was 12.1 lower than in the same month of the previous year, a significant decline was recorded in the great majority of the classes.

Out of the subsections the manufacture of coke, and refined petroleum products, having a small weight, lagged behind the most, by 35%, year-on-year, with sales decreasing in both directions.

Industrial output grew in five regions, and declined in three, year-on-year. The highest volume growth was observed in Central Transdanubia (13.6%), the most significant decrease (14.8%) was registered in Budapest.

The volume of total new orders in the observed divisions of manufacturing was 28% higher compared to December 2024. New domestic orders increased by 15.0%, new export orders went up by 29%. The total stock of orders at the end of December was above the previous year’s level by 19.1%.

In 2025, compared to the previous year:

Industrial production lessened by 3.2%, following the 4.1% decrease of the previous year. Within it, out of the three sections, output declined by 3.1% in manufacturing, by 1.6% in the energy industry, by 5.1% in the low weight representing mining and quarrying, compared to 2024.

In manufacturing, production value at current prices was more than HUF 50 thousand billion in 2025. Out of the thirteen manufacturing subsections production fell in eleven, to the greatest extent, by 12.0%, in the manufacture of coke, and refined petroleum products. Output in the manufacture of transport equipment, the largest subsection, declined by 4.3%. Production volume grew in two subsections: by 14.5% in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products, and by 1.7% in the manufacture of wood and paper products, and printing.

Industrial export was 2.5% lower than a year earlier (a 3.3% volume decrease was registered in 2024). Export accounted for 64% of total industrial sales and for 73% of manufacturing sales. Manufacturing export declined by 2.0% compared to the previous year. Within it the volume of export sales fell by 5.5% in the 31% weight representing manufacture of transport equipment.

Industrial domestic sales decreased by 4.6%, including a 3.3% domestic sales decline within manufacturing. Domestic sales lagged behind the previous year’s level by 0.6% in the manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco products, representing the largest (29%) weight in domestic manufacturing sales.

Industrial output grew in three regions, stagnated in one and fell in four, year-on-year. The highest volume growth (5.3%) was observed in the Northern Great Plain, the most significant decline (12.0%) was registered in the Southern Great Plain.
