FCC’s Brendan Carr Sends Warning To Stephen Colbert: ‘Enforce The Law’
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chair Brendan Carr has warned he will “enforce the law” amid Stephen Colbert’s dispute with his CBS bosses over what he can air on his late-night talk show.
Colbert said on Monday that CBS attorneys directed him to not to air an interview with Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico amid fear of retaliation from the FCC over a rule that requires broadcasters to give equal time to opposing political candidates.
CBS denied it prohibited Colbert from airing the interview, but said the show was “provided with legal guidance” that the broadcast could trigger the rule.
In an appearance on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle on Wednesday, Carr said the rule was “about stopping legacy media from picking winners and losers in elections. It’s so that the American people can decide.”
He added: “Perhaps Colbert and other establishment Democrats want to put the thumb on the scale in this Democrat primary for one candidate over the other, I don’t know, you’ll have to ask them, but we’re going to enforce the law and hold broadcasters accountable.”
This is a developing story. More to follow.
