The vast majority of Hungarians support the government’s bridge-building foreign policy, said Zoltán Kiszelly, Director of Political Analysis at Századvég, on Saturday on the M1 news channel’s program, presenting the results of a survey published by the institute on Saturday morning.
He said that based on the survey, nearly 70 percent of people either agree or strongly agree with the government’s bridge-building foreign policy.
Zoltán Kiszelly emphasized that Hungary is part of the West, but two-thirds of the world is not. Economic growth is happening in Southeast Asia, while Europe is stagnating. Germany has been stagnating for almost four years, “and if Germany is doing badly, we are doing badly too,” he said.
The cooperation that used to be common between Western and Eastern companies is now considered the direct result of Russian energy being used to manufacture Chinese batteries, which are installed in German luxury cars in Hungary, for example. “This cooperation means jobs in Hungary”, he said.
Zoltán Kiszelly added that Hungary is part of the Western alliance systems, the European Union and NATO, which is supported by the majority of Hungarians.
As part of the Western system, Hungary is also opening up more to the world’s centers of development, which are in Southeast Asia. As part of its policy of opening up to the East and the world, Hungary is maintaining its Western alliance system and its ties to the German economy and the Western economy, but is trying to balance this by maintaining good relations with Eastern countries where growth is currently much higher, for instance with the Chinese economy, by maintaining Russian energy imports, and by cooperating with Turkey, he said, noting that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also has good relations with the Argentine president.
Based on the results of the research presented in the program, a high percentage of people have heard that U.S. President Donald Trump has invited Viktor Orbán to join the Board of Peace. The Director said that people are eagerly awaiting an end to the war raging in our neighborhood.

He added that Századvég will present the latest results of its Europe Project 2026 research next Tuesday, and these also show that – with the exception of the Balts, Scandinavians, and Poles, who may have a different attitude toward the war in Ukraine – most of Europe would like to see an end to this conflict, would not send weapons or soldiers, but would seek to end this war through negotiations.
Donald Trump also considers it important to end the war and is seeking an agreement, which is in line with the expectations of the majority of the Hungarian people, he noted.
According to the survey, more than 60 percent of respondents consider it important, rather important, or very important for Hungary to be present at the “international political negotiating table.” Zoltán Kiszelly said: “The European Union is on the wrong end of the stick here.”
Fact
Hungary has been pushing for a negotiated settlement since the outbreak of the war, and Viktor Orbán even went on a “peace mission” in the summer of 2024, when he was the first and only European leader to call for a negotiated settlement, he recalled. He continued by saying that the leaders of the European Union are now at odds with the Americans: they want to break away from China and Russian energy, even though this has long been the basis of the Western European economic model. Hungary offers an alternative to Brussels’ misguided policy because it is keeping the channels of negotiation open with the East, with Russia, in order to reach a negotiated agreement, said the Director of Political Analysis, noting that Viktor Orbán actively supports Donald Trump’s peace policy.
Zoltán Kiszelly further elaborated that “Donald Trump offers a chance to end the war quickly”: a ceasefire in March, presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine in May, and a lasting agreement in June are all part of the U.S. president’s plans. He added that the Hungarian people recognize that if this war, which Viktor Orbán has been urging to end since its outbreak, were to conclude, Hungary would breathe a sigh of relief, and the sanctions could be reconsidered. This would lift a number of burdens from the European Union and the Hungarian economy, he added.
These are the two alternatives, and they are becoming increasingly clear. Hungarians will be able to choose between them in 50 days, said the Director of Political Analysis at Századvég.
