The enormous differences in the polls for the Hungarian elections in April could not be more contrasting. While Western media report a clear lead for the opposition TISZA party, polls showing Fidesz with a significant lead are ignored. As Fidesz MEP András László sees it, these fake opinion polls by left-wing pollsters are not a mistake, but the result of a coldly calculated strategy.
In his post on X, the politician recalls that left-wing pollsters began “artificially inflating” support for the TISZA party over a year ago. András László cites three reasons for this approach:
Firstly, the politician sees the goal of the left as uniting all supporters of all opposition parties under TISZA, explaining that 106 of the 199 MPs are elected in constituencies and therefore all voters must be united behind a single candidate.
Overestimating TISZA’s numbers would signal to left-wing voters to leave their parties, as their vote for a party or candidate that does not make it could be lost.
Opinion pollsters and left-wing media joined in these efforts. “The strategy was similar four years ago. But in 2022, all parties (far-right, socialists, liberals, greens) united under one roof. That made things difficult, especially in ideological terms. It was an impossible constellation, and their supporters knew it,” said the MEP.
In his article, he recalled that this attempt had already failed before the last elections and that the opposition had been embroiled in a massive scandal involving foreign funding. Therefore, he said, it had now been decided to unite everyone under “a single NEW party that apparently has no baggage,” said the politician, emphasizing that the elites in the media and opinion pollsters had carried out a coup against all existing parties “to make room for the new, shiny thing.”
András László sees the attempt to discredit or invalidate the April election results as the third reason for publishing fake polls.
“If European partners are convinced that TISZA is far ahead of Fidesz, this would allow for destabilization and non-recognition of the results by TISZA and European governments hostile to us in case we win,” warned the politician, referring to the events in Georgia after the elections. This is also the reason why Politico refuses to include poll data in the Poll of Polls that show Fidesz in the lead, the MEP emphasized, describing this approach as “very corrupt, very irresponsible, very dangerous.”
