Budapest Drinking Water Passes Quality Test

Drinking water in the Hungarian capital is safe and healthy. New tests conducted by Budapest Waterworks confirm that the concentration of so-called “forever chemicals” (PFAS) is well below EU limits.

In times of growing concern about environmental pollution, Budapest Waterworks gives the all-clear. The metropolis’ tap water not only meets all current Hungarian health regulations, but also shines in the latest tests for persistent pollutants.

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of over a thousand synthetic compounds that have been used worldwide since the 1950s in products such as Teflon pans, outdoor clothing, and firefighting foams. As they hardly degrade in nature, they have accumulated globally in soils and waters.

Although EU-wide mandatory testing for these substances will not take effect until January 12, 2026, Budapest has already taken action. In collaboration with the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences (MATE), numerous samples were taken at water extraction points and in the distribution network.

The measurement data is clear.

The measured values are well below the permissible maximum limits. An independent validation by the National Center for Public Health and Pharmacy (NCPHP) confirmed these results.

In the Budapest supply areas, a concentration of less than 30 percent of the health limit was found. In many cases, the values were even at the detection limit.

A decisive factor for the high water quality in Budapest is the extraction method. Most of the water is obtained through bank filtration along the Danube. The natural gravel and sand layers of the riverbank act as a giant biological filter, retaining most of the pollutants before the water enters the system.

In order to guarantee the highest standards in the future, the waterworks have invested heavily in their laboratory technology.

The company emphasized that it is now well prepared for the upcoming EU regulations thanks to state-of-the-art analysis methods.

The combination of regular checks, state-of-the-art laboratories, and the natural protection of our water bases guarantees that drinking water in Budapest can continue to be enjoyed without hesitation,”

the statement said.
