Could Rueben Bain’s Shocking NFL Combine Measurements Land Him in Dallas?

Miami defensive end Rueben Bain has proven to be one of the better edge rushers in College Football over the last few seasons.

Bain notched 20.5 sacks in the three collegiate seasons, including 9.5 this past season for the runner-up Hurricanes. His dominance was quite visible during Miami’s College Football Playoff run. Bain racked up one sack, eight tackles and 2.5 TFL in the title game versus Indiana.

When he wasn’t making plays, Bain was providing immense pressure even when facing packages aimed at chipping him with running backs or a tandem blocking scheme with a tackle and inline tight end.

Widely projected as a top-10 pick, Thursday’s NFL Combine reveal may have hindered Bain’s stock to the point where he could fall towards the middle of the first round.

Bain measured at a shade over 6-foot-2. He weighed 263 pounds, and while not the biggest edge in the world, those numbers aren’t prohibitive in terms of his draft position. What could be a major deterrent is the situation revolving around his arm length. Something that’s been a huge talking point with pundits across the sport for all players up front on either side of the ball,

Bain was registered as having arms under 31 inches long (30 7/8”). According to analyst Warren Sharp, no player with arms shorter than 31 inches has accrued double-digit sack numbers at any point over the last 20 seasons.

The possible drop could be a major boon for the Dallas Cowboys. Picking at No. 12, the Cowboys have an obvious history in doing well with ex-Miami players. Bain is a high-profile athlete with the requisite make-up to be a very good player.

Dallas needs edge rushing help in the worst way possible given the fact it dealt Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers last year.

33-year-old Jadaveon Clowney led the team in sacks last year. Former high-round pick Sam Williams has been a major bust. Bain would immediately become the team’s most potent option off the edge. The toughness, energy, and raw power he operates with is something that would endear Bain to the fanbase from the jump.

Even more than that, seeing a player with Bain’s profile fall to the Cowboys — or perhaps the team jumping up a few spots to nab him — would be a very “Dallas” thing to have happen.
