The Hungarian Reformed Charity Service has announced a fundraising campaign to help those living in Transylvania, particularly in the settlements along the Târnava (Küküllő River), which were hit by floods last year. The charity service would help by drilling wells in settlements where a significant portion of the drinking water supply has become salty as a result of the floods.
They wrote that the water flooding the lower levels of the Parajd salt mine in Praid, Romania and the closure of the mine had left not only the miners in a hopeless situation, as health tourism based on the salt mine was the most important source of livelihood for the entire region.
Another consequence of the floods was that the water in the rivers, the groundwater, and a significant portion of the drinking water supplies had become salty, causing serious difficulties in the affected settlements.
The salty water not only makes animal husbandry and crop production almost impossible, but also poses a long-term health risk to the people living there. Everyday water use – cooking, washing, personal hygiene – has also become a challenge, and for many families, their livelihoods have been threatened.

The Hungarian Reformed Church Aid was approached by the Reformed Diocese of Küküllő with a request to install wells in the settlements, indicating that as a result of the flooding, the water in the settlements along the Küküllő River had become bitter, then salty and undrinkable.
“The communities were faced with an unsolvable problem: no drinking water, nothing to water their fields with, nothing to feed their animals,” said Attila Batizán, dean of the Reformed Diocese of Küküllő, in a statement.
The solution would be to drill wells. The diocese has already established community wells in two settlements, which provide enough water to supply drinking water to hundreds of people and to operate small farms.
The Hungarian Reformed Charity Service is announcing a nationwide fundraising campaign to help the people of Transylvania, with the aim of providing financial support for the construction of at least ten community wells.
Donations can be made on their website by clicking on the Élő Víz (Living Water) page under the campaigns tab, or by making a donation to the Hungarian Reformed Charity Service Foundation’s bank account number 10702019-85008898-51100005, with the reference “Erdély” (Transylvania).
