Ukrainian Ambassador Summoned Over Forced Conscription of Ethnic Hungarians

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó

“The Ukrainian ambassador, Fedir Shandor, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade due to the ongoing forced conscription in the neighboring country, which claimed the lives of two more young ethnic Hungarians,” said Péter Szijjártó, head of the ministry, in Budapest on Monday.

The minister stated that in order to maintain the war in Ukraine, “open manhunts are taking place” on the streets, and in this context, the government has now learned of two more Hungarian victims.

“A young man with Hungarian citizenship from Berehove (Beregszász, a town in western Ukraine with a significant Hungarian minority – editor’s note) was taken away by violent manhunters sent from Odessa, despite the fact that he had been officially exempted from conscription. Another young man of Hungarian nationality, who struggled with mental health issues, was also kidnapped and has since disappeared,” he said.

He announced that the Ukrainian ambassador had been summoned again to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade today to express their protest against “violent conscription and open manhunts on the streets.”

Péter Szijjártó emphasized: “A completely hopeless and senseless war is raging in Ukraine, and EU leaders are pouring money into it without counting the cost, and they want to take even more money from the people of Europe to continue this senseless and hopeless war, which brings only more deaths, more suffering, and more manhunts every day.”

“This war is completely hopeless and must be ended immediately. This war only brings more and more victims and suffering every day, and it makes no sense,” he said.
