Dominik Szoboszlai remains the benchmark when it comes to aesthetics in English football. Viewers of the BBC program Match of the Day voted the Hungarian national team captain’s free kick against Manchester City as the official “Goal of the Month for February.”
It was the 74th minute of the top match on February 8 when Dominik Szoboszlai took aim from a good 27 meters out. With a perfect flight curve, he curled the ball past the inside of the two-man wall. The ball hit the left post and flew unstoppably into the net. Even a world-class goalkeeper like Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Citizens’ goal was frozen to the spot by this precision shot.
With 35 percent of the votes, the Hungarian midfielder secured the award for the second time this season.
On August 31, he had already triumphed against Arsenal with an almost identical free kick. Despite the dream goal, however, the afternoon in Manchester remained bittersweet for Dominik Szoboszlai. Liverpool let their lead slip in the closing stages, and the Hungarian was also shown a red card.
However, after the disappointment against City, the reigning champions have made an impressive comeback. With three consecutive wins behind them – most recently a 5-2 home win against West Ham United – the Reds are back on course for the Champions League places.
Dominik Szoboszlai once again shone as a playmaker against the Hammers, underlining his outstanding form. He has collected seven points in his last eight competitive games.
The race for Europe remains a thriller in the table. Liverpool are currently three points behind Manchester United and Aston Villa (3rd and 4th place), but are keeping club world champions Chelsea at bay.
This Tuesday evening (matchday 29), the Merseyside team face what should be a routine task. Liverpool are away to bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers. But caution is advised: the Wolves gained new hope in their relegation battle with a win against Aston Villa on Friday. Even though they are a whopping 14 points adrift of safety, Liverpool will face a highly motivated opponent at Molineux Stadium.
Nevertheless, only a win will do for Szoboszlai if they are to keep the pressure on the top four in the Premier League.
