Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Facing Another Setback
The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback woes have haunted them since their reinstation nearly three decades ago. Now that Todd Monken is taking the reins of the team, they may take drastic measures to solve that problem.
Monken and the Baltimore Ravens reportedly wanted to draft Shedeur Sanders last season. He’ll now get a chance to develop and mold him, but that doesn’t mean the Browns will just hand him the keys to ignition.
Deshaun Watson is back to full strength and may get a chance to reclaim his starting spot. And according to NFL insider Matthew Berry, the Browns may also add some external competition in the offseason.
In his latest intel report from the NFL Scouting Combine, he had the Browns as the leading candidate to trade for Anthony Richardson.
“Final QB nugget is that the Colts are expected to move on from Anthony Richardson this offseason and a potential landing spot for him is Cleveland, where Todd Monken, who spent the last few years coaching Lamar Jackson, could try to develop Richardson’s considerable athletic gifts,” revealed Berry.
On paper, this move should be a no-brainer. Richardson is a former No. 4 pick and one of the most athletic prospects the league has ever seen at the position.
In reality, not so much. He’s also been the least accurate quarterback in the league, has struggled with injuries, and raised concerns about his work ethic and feel for the game when he infamously tapped himself out of a drive because he was tired.
Granted, Sanders was far from elite himself, and he doesn’t have the same physical traits and athleticism as Richardson. That said, it doesn’t make much sense to replace one project with another.
Unless the Browns get Richardson at a major discount and keep him as a developmental piece who may not start for a year or two, they’d probably be better off just rolling the dice on Shedeur.
