Fidesz Leads in Polls: Péter Magyar Scores Own Goal Betting on Zelenskyy’s Oil Blockade

A survey conducted by U.S.-based McLaughlin & Associates between February 25 and March 2 found that Péter Magyar took the wrong position on a key national issue in the eyes of most voters, Index reports. The survey suggests that a measure by Volodymyr Zelenskyy may have backfired on the opposition party Tisza, while Fidesz maintained its six-point lead.

The Fidesz–KDNP party alliance would win in parliamentary elections scheduled for this Sunday, as the party has maintained its six-point lead in terms of party preferences in the National Assembly, according to a recent poll by McLaughlin & Associates commissioned by Index.

The telephone survey was conducted between February 25 and March 2 on a sample of 1,000 respondents. It targeted individuals who are expected to participate in the election. The data shows that Péter Magyar chose the wrong side in a key national issue by siding with Brussels and Kyiv, writes the liberal portal.

When Hungarian voters were asked about the suspension of oil and gas supplies,

the majority, 61 percent, disagreed with Brussels’ decision to permanently halt Russian oil and gas deliveries to Hungary from April 15.

The most discouraging finding for Péter Magyar and the Tisza Party is that nearly seven in ten voters (69 percent) said they would not be willing to pay a surcharge to immediately halt Russian oil and gas supplies to Hungary. The survey found that only 18 percent support the position represented by Péter Magyar and his party.

The survey shows

  • Fidesz at 43 percent,
  • Tisza Party at 37 percent,
  • Democratic Coalition (Demokratikus Koalíció – DK) at 5 percent,
  • Our Homeland Movement (Mi Hazánk Mozgalom) at 5 percent, and
  • Hungarian Two-Tailed Dog Party (Magyar Kétfarkú Kutyapárt) at 3 percent.

What is surprising, however, is that the Democratic Coalition is measured at 5 percent, since earlier polls suggest the party would not reach the parliamentary threshold.

According to John McLaughlin, the head of the poll,

Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hostile actions and “punitive” measures against Hungary “backfired on his friend Péter Magyar and gave Hungarians another reason to re-elect Viktor Orbán as prime minister in April.”

The poll was conducted under the direction of John McLaughlin, who has served as a political consultant and pollster for Donald Trump since 2011. Internationally, he has conducted research for the British Conservative Party and for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
