Team USA sends San Francisco Giants right-hander Logan Webb to the mound for the tournament opener after romping to 15-1 and 14-4 exhibition wins over the Giants and Colorado Rockies, respectively, before heading to Houston. Reigning American League MVP Aaron Judge serves as captain, with both of last year’s Cy Young Award winners, Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers, on board as well. The star power also includes Cal Raleigh, Bryce Harper, Bobby Witt Jr., Gunnar Henderson, and Alex Bregman.
Brazil enters its second WBC and its first since 2013 after securing a berth in qualifying last year. The roster includes no current major leaguers but has legacy players in Dante Bichette Jr., Joseph Contreras, and Lucas Ramirez. Contreras is the son of former big-leaguer José Contreras, while Ramirez’s father is former Boston Red Sox great Manny Ramirez. New York Mets infielder Bo Bichette was held out of the classic as he learns a new position this spring. Contreras is the youngest player in the tournament at 17 and is ranked as a top-50 prospect for this summer’s amateur draft.
