A Zebra Foal Was Born at the Szeged Zoo, Visitors Can Decide Its Name

A plains zebra foal was born at the Szeged Wildlife Park, and the institution has announced a contest to name the mare.

The little foal was born on January 23. The mother of the few-weeks-old foal, Dóra, is close by, but the foal is already getting to know the paddock with its companions, thus visitors can also observe it.

Zookeepers are waiting for visitors’ suggestions on what to name the foal via a questionnaire available on the zoo’s website. The last zebra foal was born at the Szeged Wildlife Park last summer after a five-year hiatus, and the colt’s name was also decided by a competition, with Etosha ultimately being chosen.

Of the many species of zebra, the plains zebra is kept in Szeged (southern Hungary). The most widespread zebra species occurs in open savannah areas from East Africa to South Africa.

Like all zebras, the plains zebra has black and white stripes, and no two individuals are completely alike. Compared to other species, the plains zebra is characterized by wider stripes, which are vertical on the front of the body and horizontal on the back. The pattern varies from north to south, with the stripes becoming narrower and more distinct closer to the Sahara, while brown-shaded stripes can also be observed among the southern populations between the black and white coloring.
