The story of the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2025 season can be described as a tale of two units.
The offense led the league in 3-and-out percentage throughout the year and never established an identity under since-fired offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. But the defense soared. The Eagles’ rushing defense left much to be desired, but they ranked fifth in scoring defense and carried the team more often than not.
So far, the Eagles’ offseason is following a similar pattern. Star wide receiver A.J. Brown may or may not get traded after frequently publicly airing his frustrations, and the Eagles are expected to part ways with veteran tight end Dallas Goedert in free agency. Meanwhile, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported today that the Eagles agreed to an extension with star defensive tackle Jordan Davis, which makes him the highest-paid nose tackle in NFL history.
Philadelphia is reportedly still focused on taking care of its defensive stars.
“An offseason goal for Philly was keeping its defensive front intact — Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, [Jaelan] Phillips,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday afternoon. “The first one is down. Phillips is days away from the market, but the Eagles are trying with him. Carter will be costly, whether done now or later.”
The Eagles acquired Phillips from the Miami Dolphins before the Nov. 4 trade deadline last season. The 2021 No. 18 overall pick had an immediate impact. In his first game as an Eagle, Phillips notched six tackles (four solo), one tackle for loss, and one fumble recovery in a 10-7 win over Green Bay.
The 26-year-old has struggled with injuries in his career, but he played in all 17 regular-season games (nine for Miami, eight for Philly) last year. He recorded two sacks, four passes defended, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 28 tackles (14 solo), seven quarterback hits, and four tackles for loss after the trade to Philadelphia.
Phillips is set to become an unrestricted free agent, which means other teams can begin negotiating with his representation on March 9 at noon EST. The new league year and free agency officially open on March 11 at 4 p.m. EST.
