$3 Billion Renovation Underway at Major Texas Airport

A major renovation project is underway at one of the world’s busiest airports.

Work has begun on a $3 billion initiative to rebuild and expand Texas’ Dallas Fort Worth International Airport’s Terminal C – a project that organizers say will “transform the airport’s busiest and most outdated terminal into a modern and spacious experience.”

Upgrades to the terminal are set to include new glass windows, the removal of over 400 “view-blocking columns,” and a raised roof, according to a statement from the airport.

The terminal is also to receive new shops, restaurants, lounge space, check-in areas and security checkpoints.

The project includes growth plans for Terminal A alongside the work on Terminal C.

Terminal A will be expanded by 140,000 square feet and five gates, while C will grow by 115,000 square feet and get four gates.

“As an international city, Dallas flourishes through the global relationships made possible by the third-busiest airport in the world. This monumental expansion will strengthen one of Dallas’ greatest assets, facilitating more dynamic connections with our nation and the world,” Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said in the statement.

“As DFW Airport embarks on this latest transformation, we are excited to see how these advancements will further enhance the travel experience and strengthen our connection to the world as the DFW Metroplex continues to rapidly grow,” said Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker.

“The re-imaging of Terminal C is a significant step forward in ensuring that DFW Airport maintains its status as a top aviation hub. We’re committed to supporting this growth and look forward to the new opportunities and benefits it will bring to travelers and the region.”

Overall completion on the makeover is currently slated for 2030.

Newsweek contacted Dallas Fort Worth International Airport for additional comment via email outside of standard working hours.

The terminal renovations are part of a wider regeneration project for Dallas Fort Worth International – an almost $9 billion plan called “DFW Forward,” billed as the airport’s largest capital investment since it opened in the 1970s, and according to an official release, it will include more than 180 projects.

Newsweek has previously mapped America’s busiest airports.

Dallas Fort Worth ranked second on the list, with around 39 million passenger boardings in 2023, according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) data.

It was beaten to the top spot by Georgia’s Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, which saw well over 50 million boardings in 2023.
