Barack Obama sends message to Democrats after victories

Former U.S. President Barack Obama has congratulated the Democrats after a dominant night in which they pulled off election victories in New York, New Jersey and Virginia.

“Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight,” Obama said in a post on X. “It’s a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win.”

“We’ve still got plenty of work to do, but the future looks a little bit brighter,” he added.

Tuesday’s elections saw Democrat Zohran Mamdani defeating former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa to be elected the next Mayor of New York City.

In New Jersey, Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill won the tightly-fought gubernatorial race to succeed term-limited Democratic Governor Phil Murphy, defeating Trump-backed Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli.

Meanwhile, in Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, which means she is set to become the first female governor to lead the state.

In a fourth victory for Democrats, Californian voters overwhelmingly supported Proposition 50, backing a redistricting plan aimed at giving Democrats five blue seats in the House, following a newly approved Texas redistricting map.

This is a developing story – more to follow.
